Why Ginger Should Be Your Best Friend

As we round the corner of flu season, it’s time to talk about ginger. Ginger is not only a prime ingredient in some of your favorite dishes (check out our Asian Winter Salad with Maple Ginger Chicken and our Lemon Ginger Vinaigrette) it is also one of the healthiest ingredients on the planet.

Health & Ginger

Ginger is used to relieve many digestive problems, such as nausea, pain, motion sickness, and loss of appetite.

Ginger can also be used as an immune booster to help you fight off the flu and the common cold.

How Do We Eat Ginger?

Ginger comes in many forms, such as:

  • Fresh root ginger (the kind you buy in the produce aisle and use for stir-fries and soups)
  • Powdered ginger (such as is usually used in baking)
  • Dried ginger

As the rainy season comes to a head, your body will need all the immune support it can get. There are many ways that you can sneak ginger into your diet, but one of our favorites is in a hot drink. Ginger can be a memorable ingredient in a variety of food dishes, but there is something about a hot ginger drink that just really hits the spot on a cold day.

Ginger Drink

Boil fresh sliced ginger in a small saucepan (the amount of ginger depends on your potency preference). Let the liquid simmer. Stir in maple syrup and/or honey to taste. This amazing drink will warm you up from the inside, soothing your throat and fighting off cold and flu symptoms.

Try having a cup of this potent mixture in the morning (to waken your digestive system and increase your metabolic ability) and a cup at night, just before you go to bed. You’ll find that you’ll sleep better and your stomach will be soothed as well.
