the ethnic spices for African stew

For the flavour, African spices such as curry powder, paprika, cinnamon and black pepper give this African beef stew tremendous flavour. For creaminess, this African beef recipe is made with coconut milk making everything taste so good!

This African beef stew recipe is such a simple dinner to throw together and so incredibly delicious. Cooking with ethnic spices adds diversity and uniqueness to our food, such as in this beef stew recipe.

What to serve with stew?

Serve this flavourful beef stew with gluten-free pull-apart soft rolls or the delicious gluten-free artisan crusty rolls, and you will have the most satisfying dinner for when you need warming comfort food.

African beef stew – recipe details

When it comes to African beef recipes, it is all about spices. So the first thing to do is season the beef with curry powder, paprika, a generous amount of black pepper and cinnamon.

Yes, you may be surprised about cinnamon. However, cinnamon is extremely aromatic and has a sweet and savoury flavour that sets this stew apart.

to get that rich beefy flavour it is important to sear the beef well

So, once the beef is generously seasoned, it is seared. The beef flavour will intensify by searing the meat, giving the stew a rich and flavourful sauce.

Now add the onions, garlic, bell peppers, tomatoes, tomato paste and coconut milk. Slowly simmer the stew beef for about an hour and a half.

Now add the remaining vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and cabbage, and finish cooking the stew until the meat is fork tender and the vegetables just right. The reason the vegetables are added at the end as not to overcook them.

And that is it for this African beef stew recipe. Nothing to it…right?

my recommendation to serve with this African beef stew

As I mentioned earlier, add a rolls such as this gluten-free butter roll for dipping in the stew, or serve over rice. But my favourite way to serve this hearty meal is with gluten-free naan. The naan is a leavened flatbread very popular in Asia, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Caribbean.

This flatbread is excellent to serve with this delicious stew because you can scoop up the thick sauce filled with tender African flavoured beef and veggies.

Another favourite beef stew recipe of mine is the Instant Pot Spiced Beef Stew with Mung Beans. A little different but ever so good!

African Beef Stew the Instant Pot Method

Season the beef

Sear the beef in a skillet. I used a cast iron skillet.

Deglaze the skillet with 1/4 cup of water and add it to the instant pot with seared beef and remaining ingredients. Stir to combine. Close the lid.

Cook on manual for 35 minutes, then release steam naturally. Enjoy!
