{"id":1671,"date":"2020-05-17T18:18:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-17T18:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.gseo.dev\/sedpharma\/?p=1671"},"modified":"2022-11-03T18:23:02","modified_gmt":"2022-11-03T18:23:02","slug":"fda-approves-first-generic-versions-of-popular-blood-thinner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.gseo.dev\/sedpharma\/news-events\/fda-approves-first-generic-versions-of-popular-blood-thinner\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA Approves First Generic Versions of Popular Blood Thinner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1227\" height=\"818\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.gseo.dev\/sedpharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/blood-thinner-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1673\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.gseo.dev\/sedpharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/blood-thinner-1.jpg 1227w, https:\/\/dev.gseo.dev\/sedpharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/blood-thinner-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.gseo.dev\/sedpharma\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/blood-thinner-1-800x533.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1227px) 100vw, 1227px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The first generic versions of the powerful blood thinner Eliquis (apixaban) were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s approvals of the first generics of apixaban are an example of how the FDA&#8217;s generic drug program improves access to lower-cost, safe and high-quality medicines,&#8221; Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA&#8217;s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in an agency news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These approvals mark the first generic approvals of a direct oral anticoagulant,&#8221; Woodcock noted. &#8220;Direct oral anticoagulants [blood thinners] do not require repeated blood testing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two types of generic tablets were approved to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic clotting in the lungs of patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation and for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which may lead to pulmonary embolism (lung clots), in patients who have had hip or knee replacement surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Atrial fibrillation is a heart rhythm disorder that raises the risk of blood clots. It is estimated that between almost 3 and 6 million Americans have atrial fibrillation, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of these individuals use anticoagulants or anti-clotting drugs to reduce that risk, the FDA noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an increased risk of blood clots forming inside a blood vessel, or strokes, if a patient stops using apixaban too early, the agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients with prosthetic heart valves should not take apixaban nor should patients with atrial fibrillation that is caused by a heart valve problem.
